The Music and Sound of Black Harvest. Giulio made this one about the audio build.
The project

Black Harvest: From Embryom Chronicles, a cosmic horror short film by Giulio Fulchignoni, built with AI-generated visuals and now running the festival circuit.

The challenge

AI visuals arrive with no sound at all: no production audio, no room tone, no footsteps, nothing. Every element of the sonic world had to be authored from zero, and it had to hold up against the film’s striking imagery instead of exposing it.

What I did

As Audio Director I designed the film’s complete sonic identity: hand-performed foley, original sound design, and the creative direction that keeps a generated world feeling physically real. The result screens in festivals, where sound plays on real cinema systems with nowhere to hide.

“Sound plays a crucial role in bringing the world of Embryom to life, and Duskosound did an incredible job capturing its atmosphere, tension, and unsettling nature. His attention to detail, creativity, and ability to elevate every scene through sound design truly made a difference in the final film.”

Materials

Reverb Tank - 50 Gallon Steel Drum - Bootsteps in Water - Chain on Djembe

04
Dry ice bubbles

For the bubbles, I filled a 50 gallon steel drum with water, threw dry ice into it, and lowered a hydrophone in to collect the true texture.

Technologies

Materials

Crows - Fish Bones - Bucket of Water - Water Bottle(s) - Pouring Liquid - Moka Pot - Coin in Water - 50 Gallon Steel Drum - Dry Ice - Dr Pepper - Ice Cubes

05
The hound

For the hound, I recorded my own dogs, Sir Charles Archibald Barkley II and Lady Willow Guinevere Barkley, while I fed them: eating, chewing, licking their lips. I couldn't have gotten the emotion of that creature properly without recording my own dogs, and having the two of them emoting the same thing in unison gives it a much more monstrous, otherworldly feel. The 50 gallon steel drum is the claws on metal.

Sir Charles Archibald Barkley II - Lady Willow Guinevere Barkley - Eating, Chewing, Lip Licking - 50 Gallon Steel Drum

06
Ice, knives and salt

Knives scraping together, salt falling on paper, and a 50 gallon steel drum clanking against itself. The ice cracking in a bowl was recorded with the LOM Geofon, a contact microphone. For the whooshes, I swung a moving blanket hard enough to overload a Shure SM57.

Materials

Knives - Ice in a Bowl - Moving Blanket - Salt on Paper - 50 Gallon Steel Drum

07
Inside the tankers

The 50 gallon steel drum, clacking against itself, gave me a great, natural feeling sound for the inside of the tankers they hide in. The burning is an orange, lit with the flame from the Zippo.

Materials

Leather Bag - Buckles - Mic Case Buckle - Zippo Lighter - Burning Orange - 50 Gallon Steel Drum

08
Claws and sand

For the claws outside their container, I lightly clanged the metal of a closed 50 gallon steel drum together. The impact is a flimsy aluminum crate closing. Salt sprinkled onto paper emulates the sand.

Materials

50 Gallon Steel Drum - Aluminum Crate - Rocks on a Car Heat Shield - Salt on Paper - Tabletop Stapler

09
The living palace

The final destination of the hero's journey is a big, goopy, nasty, living, slimy palace with people inside of it. Cantaloupe and lettuce gave me those sounds.

Materials

Cantaloupe - Lettuce

10
From outside to inside

As the hero progresses, the sonic palette moves from the environment, the sounds you hear outside of the human being, to sounds that get more internal: breathing into a giant bucket, breathing into a tube, wet mouth sounds and sloppy lip sounds.

Materials

Breath in a Giant Bucket - Breath in a Tube - Wet Mouth Sounds - Lip Sounds - Cantaloupe

11
Dry ice on metal

I layered dry ice wedged against metal: a tool, a heat shield from the bottom of my car, and a 50 gallon steel drum. The Cjossul, a contact microphone, recorded the vibrations of the steel drum from the screech, and the Ušis recorded the screech of the dry ice itself. Then a violin bow on a Tibetan singing bowl and on a crystal wine glass.

Materials

Dry Ice - Metal Tool - Car Heat Shield - 50 Gallon Steel Drum - Violin Bow - Tibetan Singing Bowl - Crystal Wine Glass

12
Water and rain

The vibrations of rain falling on a porch in a rainstorm, captured with the LOM Geofon contact mic, and raindrops hitting a window. Ginger beer poured from the bottle and a champagne flute into a glass bowl, and one half full ginger beer bottle shaken for the splash. Gargling water, a water bottle cap taken off loudly, water poured into a bucket, a moka pot handled whole and detached, water drops on a rain jacket, and a running laundry dryer.

Materials

Rain on a Window - Rain on a Porch - Moka Pot - Water Bottle - Ginger Beer Bottles - Champagne Flute - Glass Bowl - Gargling Water - Water Drops on a Rain Jacket - Laundry Dryer - Bucket

13
Rain through the roof

The cork of a scotch bottle, popped, for the vial. The LOM Ušis sat right against the window, and the LOM Geofon right against the wood of the porch, which is good for simulating the sound of rain vibrating through the roof and creating an audible sound on the other side. That's why a contact mic is really good for this.

Materials

Rain on a Window - Rain on a Porch - Ginger Beer Bottles - Scotch Bottle Cork

14
The monsters eating

This is the sound of a bunch of the monsters in the film all eating human flesh and crunching on bone, all around the viewer. I recorded it on my knees in a treated closet at around 2 AM, eating a steamed crab to get the bone crunch: tearing a banana peel, chewing a banana, slurping butter, sucking on lemony, buttery crab, and sloppily biting into a red bell pepper.

Technologies

LOM Uši - AKG P220

Materials

Banana - Banana Peel - Steamed Crab - Lemon Butter - Red Bell Pepper

15
Insects, sand and bone

The insect sound is a broken old violin, bowed in a completely atonal way. The sand on the wind is salt on a piece of paper. The crows are layered with crows in a tree outside my house. We didn't want to show it, but the bones being crunched is the sound of cracking open a steamed crab. The footsteps are steel toed boots walking on broken glass.

Technologies

Materials

Broken Violin - Violin Bow - Salt on Paper - Crows - Steamed Crab - Steel Toed Boots - Broken Glass

Creature vocal layers in the film also draw on Boom Library and Penguin Grenade.
